Bluetooth Connection Drops or Stutters – How to Fix It

Few things are more annoying than music cutting out or stuttering mid-song. The good news: in 99% of cases, this is easy to fix. Follow these steps to get a smooth, stable Bluetooth connection again.

Your earbuds act like this:

  • Music randomly cuts out or stutters during playback
  • Connection drops in busy places like stations or gyms

Good to know

Earbuds are the receiving device. They simply play the signal they get. If the sound cuts out, the issue is almost always with the signal arriving at the earbuds. Not the earbuds themselves. Think of it as “don’t shoot the messenger”: if the signal is bad, that’s exactly what you’ll hear.

1. Reduce Interference

Bluetooth works on the crowded 2.4 GHz band, which can be affected by Wi-Fi routers, microwaves, or other Bluetooth devices. Move away from heavy wireless traffic (train stations, open offices) or switch off other devices temporarily. If it only happens at home, turn off unused Bluetooth devices nearby.

Also: Sometimes music stops briefly when a notification sound plays on your phone. If your notification volume is set to 0%, you won’t hear the sound, it just feels like a drop-out of the earbuds, while it is not. Try closing unused apps and adjusting notification volume to avoid this.

2. Reset and Re-Pair

If dropouts continue, perform a factory reset to clear old pairing data. This often resolves conflicts from previous devices. After resetting, reconnect to your phone or laptop. See all reset guides.

Extra tip

Still having issues? Try pairing the earbuds with another phone or laptop. If the problem disappears, the issue was with your original device. Update its Bluetooth drivers or OS to the latest version.
