Headphone or Earbuds Microphone Not Working? How to Fix It

Your call partner says they can’t hear you clearly. Frustrating! In most cases, you can fix microphone problems with a few simple steps.

Your earbuds act like this:

  • Your call partner says you sound muffled or distant
  • Your voice cuts out or has wind noise during calls
  • You are often told “I can’t hear you well” during calls

1. Test Your Microphone

Before troubleshooting, check if the problem really comes from your earbuds. Record a short voice memo while wearing them, then listen back. If you sound clear, the issue was likely your phone connection, network, or your partner’s speaker.

2. Check for Wind and Background Noise

Even premium earbuds can’t cancel all wind noise. If you are biking or walking outside, strong wind can overpower the mic. Try calling from a sheltered place or pull up your hoodie to block wind. Avoid calling in very noisy places like train stations or busy restaurants.

3. Clean the Microphone Openings

Dirt or grease can block the tiny mic holes. Carefully clean them:

  • Find the small mic openings on each earbud
  • Use a soft brush (like a clean toothbrush) to gently brush away dirt
  • Push debris outwards, not into the earbud
